Relish the taste of our Iconic Wines

These wines are the epitome of Tahbilk; they carry the legacy of the Tahbilk story and form part of Australian wine history. They are continuously made in the original style and blend of the legendary winemaker Eric Stevens Purbrick, using the best quality fruit from the estate and from vines that include some of the world's oldest. The two Very Rare fortified wines are the only two wines not grown and made on the estate; however have a remarkable story unto themselves.

Tahbilk 1927 Vines Marsanne: A Taste of History

Our Iconic Wine Tasting experience begins with the limited-release 1927 Vines Marsanne, produced from some of the world's oldest Marsanne vines. This exceptional wine has garnered accolades from wine writers, critics, and judges alike, its trophy and medal tally continuing to rise with each passing year.

Tahbilk Old Vines Cabernet Shiraz: A Perfect Blend of Tradition and Innovation

First created in 1957 under the supervision of legendary winemaker Eric Stevens Purbrick, it is believed to be the first such ‘Estate Grown’ blend in Australia.
This quintessential Australian blend boasts an impressive lineage of older vineyard blocks and a rich heritage. The contributing vines' average age exceeds 35 years, setting a new benchmark for releases from our estate.

Tahbilk ESP Wines: A Celebration of Eric Stevens Purbrick's Legacy

Our ESP wines showcase the traditional Tahbilk wine-making style while demonstrating exceptional cellar potential. These wines trace their roots back to 1948 when Chief Winemaker Eric Stevens Purbrick crafted the first Bin Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The best fruit was sourced from various vineyards across Tahbilk Estate and expertly matured in French Oak hogshead barrels.

First named Bin in 1948, then Reserve until 1997, Eric’s Grandson, Alister, renamed these wines Eric Stevens Purbrick (ESP) in his Grandfather’s honour from 1998 onwards.

Tahbilk 1860 Vines Shiraz: Un-Grafted, Pre-Phylloxera Shiraz Plantings

Our revered vines have a rich history, having survived both Phylloxera and the wrath of Mother Nature, such as droughts, floods, and killer frosts. Our '1860 Vines' planting was nominated by renowned USA Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the 25 Great Vineyards of the World.

Indeed, our vineyards perfectly capture the terroir – the total environment of a place, including the soil, climate, aspect, vine, and even history “is most clearly perceptible in the wine.” Wine auctioneers Langton's recognized Tahbilk's '1860 Vines' Shiraz releases as ‘Outstanding,’ defining them as “the best of Australian winemaking practices, vineyard provenance, and regional voice.”

Tahbilk Very Rare Tawny & Muscat: Liquid History in a Glass

There's quite a bit of a back story with these two fortified wines. It's a story that dates back to the 1880s when the solera for these wines was established.
A solera is a Spanish system for maturing fortified wine, which is topped up every year with new wine but increases its aged complexity as the years progress without ever losing the original material.
Wine merchants would often buy bulk wine and mature it in their own cellars before blending and releasing it for sale, such as W.J Seabrook, who laid the foundations of the Talavera Cellars in 1878.
Tucker Seabrook was Tahbilk's national distributor during the 1990s and early 2000s, and so Tahbilk was asked to guard the solera barrels in the underground cellars from 1992 - 2004.
Over the years, the barrels were moved from cellar to cellar, and although bottlings did take place, it is estimated that the Muscat is at least 60 years old and Tawny 80 years old. Both, we hope, include a drop of wine from the 1880s.
In 2020, Alister Purbrick, CEO of Tahbilk, jumped at the opportunity to purchase the remaining barrels, and it's a real pleasure to share with you some real liquid history!
